IPL Bikini Pro Brianne Cruz

“It’s an absolute honor to be able to inspire people that I don’t personally know or haven’t even met!”

INTERVIEW & PHOTOS BY BEN YOSEF

BEN YOSEF: Welcome to VIGOROUS Magazine! This is officially your second magazine feature, and third post on the IPL website, since you first hit the IPL stage this past spring. Your first was the Natural Bikini Magazine Cover story! Congratulations again! What is it like for you being able to reach and inspire more people through these publications?

BRIANNE CRUZ: Thank you! It’s an absolute honor to be able to inspire people that I don’t personally know or haven’t even met! I think that everyone can relate to fitness and I believe that physique athletes are the peak epitome of what fitness enthusiasts look up to. As a new IPL Pro Bikini competitor, I want to strive to not only be a role model onstage, but off the stage as well. Meaning that I am always as professional as I can be, practice good sportsmanship, and have an understanding and appreciation for everything that goes on behind the scenes. Without the IPL show promoters, sponsors, staff and volunteers, living out my goals and dreams would not be possible!

BEN: Love that. Where were you born and raised?

BRIANNE: I was born and raised in the great state of Alaska and still currently reside here. It will always be home to me.

BEN: What is it like to train for physique competitions? Is it easier or tougher than people think?

...anyone can enter a competition if they choose to. However, actually being successful, competitive and having longevity in the sport, does not come easy.

BRIANNE: Well, I have actually been competing for the last 14 years now. And I think that sure, anyone can enter a competition if they choose to. However, actually being successful, competitive and having longevity in the sport, does not come easy. I definitely think that it is tougher than most people think. Everyone just sees the glitz and glamour of show day and maybe a few glimpses of a competitor’s workout routine or meal plan. But what they don’t see are the sacrifices made every minute of every day.

When in competition prep, you can’t just mindlessly grab any snack or eat anything without weighing or tracking it. You can’t go out to dinner at a restaurant without having to make a complicated special order or without bringing your own condiments in your purse. You can’t drink alcohol when you go to a party or attend a special occasion. You can’t skip a day of working out because you don’t feel like doing it. To truly be successful in the sport, you have to give it your all and not cut any corners. It is what it is, and there is no sugarcoating it. There are very few people that have the kind of mental strength and self-control that bodybuilding and physique competitions demand. But that’s also what I think makes the sport so special.

BEN: Great perspective. Love that champion, winner’s mindset. You were pretty fire during our photoshoot and you seem so comfortable in front of the camera. How did you get to be so good? Does modelling come natural to you? Also, can you offer any tips when it comes to posing and modelling for the camera?

...learn what your best angles are, from your head to your toes, and do what comes natural to you. Have fun with it!

BRIANNE: I wouldn’t necessarily say that “modeling” comes naturally to me. However, performing onstage and showcasing my physique to the best of my ability…hiding my weaknesses and highlighting my strengths DOES come easy to me. This stems from my performance background and I would say that I just pose like I’m onstage when I do photoshoots. My best tips for posing and modeling in front of the camera would be to learn what your best angles are, from your head to your toes, and do what comes natural to you. Have fun with it!

BEN: What are some of your interests outside of competing and modelling?

BRIANNE: I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, fishing, snowmobiling and playing ice hockey. I also really like to make self-care a priority in my free time. Acupuncture and massage therapy, for recovery from weight-training, keeps me on top of my game.

BEN: As this interview goes live, we are 9 weeks away from the IPL Sunshine Classic competition in Destin, Florida. You will be making your Pro Bikini Debut at this contest. How are you feeling about this upcoming event, your Pro Debut and what can we expect you to bring at this show?

I’m all gas and no brakes! You can also expect to see me with different colored hair and bikini color as well.

BRIANNE: I’m feeling really excited and confident for my Pro Debut in Florida! I have always had a very well-built lower body, and I have been working really hard lately on gaining more size to my shoulders. I know that with this improvement, I will be bringing a great, well-balanced overall package, from top to bottom. Along with the necessary conditioning. I’m all gas and no brakes! You can also expect to see me with different colored hair and bikini color as well.

BEN: Sweet! You rocked it with what you brought in April, but I am excited to see the updated version! Brianne, once again, it has been a pleasure chatting with you and as I have said before, it is an honor and a pleasure to have you as part of this league and community. Also! This is officially your third feature/post since competing in the IPL, which means you will now have a special link created on the site that will host all your magazine articles, interviews and features! Now those looking to learn more about you through our publications can just click on this link and find all your IPL content in one place. So, congratulations! Any final thoughts for VIGOROUS Magazine before we let you go?

...I just want to applaud the other fellow athletes putting in the hard work! Keep going and remember that nothing worth having comes easy!

BRIANNE: Thanks so much! I really appreciate that and everything you do for the IPL and it’s athletes. You truly go above and beyond and it’s so incredible! And I am honored to be a part of and have the privilege to represent the IPL as a Professional Athlete. And finally, I just want to applaud the other fellow athletes putting in the hard work! Keep going and remember that nothing worth having comes easy!
