STAGE A YEAR LATER

In just 14 months, Katie Baker transformed from a first-time mom to a first-time bikini competitor—stepping on stage at the IPL Arizona Championship with poise, strength, and purpose. Her story is one of resilience, faith, and finding a new sense of identity in the wake of motherhood. In this exclusive INSPIRE Magazine interview, Katie shares her powerful journey back to herself, one rep and one meal prep at a time.

“It was a dream come true and a huge accomplishment.”

INSPIRE MAGAZINE: Let’s start with the big moment—how did it feel stepping on stage just a year after having your baby?
KATIE BAKER: It felt amazing! Stepping on stage was such an out-of-body experience. My sweet baby was just 14 months old at the time of my competition, and knowing she was out there in the crowd gave me another level of confidence. I just felt so proud of myself. It was a dream come true and a huge accomplishment.
INSPIRE: Your baby girl is beautiful. What can you tell us about her?
KATIE: Miss Parker Lynn Baker is an absolute dream. Getting to be her mom is the greatest gift, and I’m so blessed God trusted me to be her mommy. Parker was conceived through IVF after a long infertility journey. She is my light at the end of every tunnel. She’s now a very adventurous little toddler—so helpful and loves to be included in chores.

“Pouring back into yourself postpartum is a must.”

INSPIRE: What inspired you to set the goal of competing in the IPL so soon after becoming a mom?
KATIE: Once I saw the IPL offered a Muscle Mommy division, I was in. It gave me confidence knowing I’d potentially be competing against other women who had recently given birth. I’ve had a dream of competing since my early 20s when I bought my first competition suit. I knew this was my time and the perfect division. My postpartum comeback was personal, and I wasn’t going to let self-doubt or timing stand in my way.
INSPIRE: Many women struggle to feel like themselves again postpartum—how did fitness help you reconnect with your identity?
KATIE: I can absolutely speak to that. I saw my body change so much over the course of my pregnancy—and prior to that through the IVF process. Altogether, I gained over 75 lbs to bring my sweet baby into this world. Getting back into the gym, having a trainer, and a new routine saved me. I was able to use my gym time as my self-care—a little break from mommy duties. It allowed me to show up not just for myself, but for those around me.

“Being able to train with my baby really helped us both.”

INSPIRE: You placed in all three divisions—Mommas, Novice, and Open. What does that kind of cross-category success mean to you as a new athlete?
KATIE: It fueled my fire. I never expected to place in the Novice and Open divisions. I put myself into a little box thinking Bikini Mommas was the division for me, but placing in Novice and Open gave me so much confidence. I feel ultimately blessed to get to compete next to women in all stages of life—mothers or not.
INSPIRE: What was the most challenging part of your prep journey, and how did you push through it?
KATIE: For me, the most challenging part of prep was finding a training schedule that worked for my busy life in motherhood. I knew I couldn’t wake up and do fasted cardio or spend over an hour a day at the gym, so I talked with my trainer—and she was amazing. Being a mother herself, she understood and was able to adjust the cardio aspect. I would put my sweet baby in a hiking pack and do high elevation and incline walking/hiking. It got us outside regularly—and connecting with nature never hurts.

“I would tell a momma lacking confidence to just get started.”

INSPIRE: How did you balance training and nutrition while caring for a young child? Any strategies that worked particularly well for you?
KATIE: I feel like meal prep is a must for motherhood. Before I decided to compete, it was an obstacle to get in healthy meals. Now, we do a big Sunday prep for the week ahead. It makes life so easy to be able to just grab my meals and go.
INSPIRE: What message would you give to other moms who feel like they’ve lost confidence or think it’s “too late” to chase personal goals?
KATIE: Our bodies are so much more capable and resilient than we think. It’s never too late—and I truly believe that. I’m inspired by the Masters class and hope to compete for many years to come. It’s such an amazing way to honor ourselves and our bodies. Once you start seeing the progress, it becomes easier—and the reward is a better, stronger you.
INSPIRE: How did you mentally prepare to be judged on stage—especially so soon after the body changes that come with motherhood?

“I hope she looks back on the pictures and sees just how little she was when Mommy first started competing.”

KATIE: I didn’t really give the body judgment aspect much thought. I know I’m so loved by my family and my sweet baby that the opinions of others judging me didn’t really come into play. My body gave life, and I put in the work to bring the best stage appearance I could—and that brought me peace.
INSPIRE: What was your favorite moment from show day at the IPL Arizona Championship?
KATIE: My absolute favorite part of the day was post-show. I got to walk out of the building and see my whole family and sweet baby. I dreamt about taking pictures with her in my tan and show day get-up. I got to hold her after being away for several hours during the competition—and that made my day.
Also, seeing my tan rub off on her and getting pictures with my sweet baby in the best shape of my life just 14 months postpartum brings me so much joy.
INSPIRE: Now that you’ve made your mark in the league, what’s next for you as an athlete and mom? Are more shows or other goals on the horizon?
KATIE: Absolutely yes. I’m hooked. I want to continue to build on my physique and bring other women into the sport. I have a goal of becoming a pre- and postnatal personal trainer. Giving birth is the greatest sporting event in a woman’s life—and to think most women aren’t training for it. I want to support women along their personal journeys, and if they have a goal of competing, I’m totally on board for that. Having a goal and sticking to it is unmatched. INSPIRE
