THROUGH FAITH & FITNESS

Tina Campbell’s journey is one of extraordinary resilience, rooted in faith, love, and relentless determination. As a mother caring for her son Austin…a quadriplegic on a ventilator…while battling her own cervical cancer, enduring personal loss, and navigating the daily weight of caregiving, Tina has transformed unimaginable adversity into strength. Through bodybuilding, she reclaimed her health and honored her son’s fighting spirit, earning IPL Pro status and multiple titles at 52. At the same time, she founded ACE Lending Closet, a nonprofit providing free medical equipment to families in need across Alaska. Now, as the Summer 2025 cover star of INSPIRE Magazine, Tina shares her story of heartbreak and healing, triumph and transformation, showing the world that even in life’s hardest seasons, it is possible to rise, rebuild, and inspire others to never give up.

"Seeing myself on the cover feels almost unreal because it represents so much more than fitness. I never set out thinking I’d be here..."

INSPIRE Magazine: Tina, welcome to INSPIRE Magazine and congratulations on earning the Summer 2025 cover! How does it feel to see your story and achievements featured in this way?
Tina Campbell: Thank you! I’m truly humbled. Seeing myself on the cover feels almost unreal because it represents so much more than fitness. I never set out thinking I’d be here…balancing bodybuilding prep while caring for my son, who is a quadriplegic on a ventilator, and running a nonprofit. To me, this cover is proof that no matter what life throws at us, we can still create space for dreams and chase them. It’s an honor, and my hope is that it inspires others to keep fighting for their goals, even in the middle of their hardest seasons.
INSPIRE: For readers who may not know your full story, can you take us back to the moment your son’s accident happened and what those first few days and weeks were like for you and your family?
Tina: It was the day that tore my world apart. Back in March 2013, when my son Austin was just five years old, a car accident shattered everything. In an instant, my happy, playful little boy was left lifeless and on life support. I was thrust into the darkest moment of my life. I remember standing in the PICU, hearing doctors tell me he was brain dead and that I should let him go. Those words broke me, but at the same time, something deep inside me rose. I knew my son was still in there. I could feel it, even if the machines were doing the work for him. I refused to give up.

"The fight for Austin’s life became more than just a mother’s battle. It turned into a mission."

The days that followed were a blur of fear, beeping monitors, and sleepless nights. Through the tears and heartbreak, I made a promise to Austin: “I will fight for you every single day of your life.” That promise became my lifeline, and out of that darkness, something new began to grow.
The fight for Austin’s life became more than just a mother’s battle. It turned into a mission. Every obstacle we faced opened my eyes to how many other families were also struggling, lost in the gaps of a system that couldn’t meet all their needs. That’s when ACE Lending Closet was born. What started as me gathering supplies for Austin slowly grew into a way to serve others and make sure no one goes without.
In many ways, ACE is my healing. It’s how I honor my son and turn our pain into purpose. Helping others not only gives people the equipment and support they need, it reminds me every day that beauty can still rise from brokenness.
INSPIRE: You’ve spoken about the long fight to keep Austin alive and navigate the medical system. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during that process, both emotionally and logistically?

"Emotionally, the hardest part was being told by doctors that my son wasn’t going to live...that he was brain dead."

Tina: Emotionally, the hardest part was being told by doctors that my son wasn’t going to live…that he was brain dead. But Austin proved them all wrong. Even though he is a quadriplegic on a ventilator, he is incredibly smart, full of life, and now preparing to graduate high school this year before heading off to college. He’s living proof that doctors don’t always know the outcome, and that determination, love, faith, and the refusal to give up can achieve what seems impossible.
Logistically, it was a constant uphill battle. We’re from Alaska, and after the accident I knew how severe it was. But as a mom, I couldn’t stop searching for hope. We left Anchorage and traveled first to Seattle, then across to the East Coast…to Baltimore and Cleveland…trying to get into the best hospitals in the country. I wanted to give Austin every possible fighting chance, whether it was to walk again someday or even breathe on his own.
That journey kept us away from home for almost a year. Along the way, I had to fight through endless authorizations, insurance denials, and layers of red tape just to get referrals and secure the basics. It took over a year before we were finally able to get Austin his first power wheelchair…something that restored a piece of independence, allowing him to move again by controlling the chair with the joystick he operates with his mouth.
That struggle is what led me to create ACE Lending Closet (Austin’s Compassion Exchange). In Alaska, we became a nonprofit providing free medical equipment and supplies to anyone in need. Unlike other programs, ACE is something I have poured my own time, money, and heart into, often funding it myself. Families often come to me when they can’t get equipment anywhere else…things like wheelchairs, shower chairs, wound care supplies, or even ventilator-related equipment.

"I do it because I know firsthand what it’s like to go without what you need, when you need it most, and not know where to turn."

I run ACE with the hope that one day we’ll have a warehouse to better serve all the communities in Alaska. I do it because I know firsthand what it’s like to go without what you need, when you need it most, and not know where to turn. I live it every day. Helping others in honor of my son has been one of the most healing parts of my journey.
INSPIRE: Austin recently underwent a full spine surgery from the top of his spine all the way to his hips. How did you and your family prepare for that, and how is he doing now in his recovery?
Tina: This was one of the most intense surgeries yet. Rods and screws running from the base of his skull all the way to his hips. Austin’s first spinal surgery stabilized him from C1 to T5, right after the car accident. In this most recent surgery, the surgeons had to tie into that old hardware at T5 and extend it all the way down to his pelvis, which made the procedure even more complex.
The surgery was necessary because over the years, Austin developed severe scoliosis and curvature in his spine. He was living in constant pain until this operation. It also gave him more stability, which helps protect his organs and his breathing. Recovery has been slow and challenging, but he’s making progress. Even in the early stages, the surgery has already relieved the pain he carried every single day.

"...after my hysterectomy, I struggled with weight gain for over a year...I reached the heaviest weight of my life, which was hard both physically and emotionally."

INSPIRE: In the midst of caring for Austin, you were also facing your own major health battles, including cervical cancer and a full hysterectomy. How did you find the strength to keep going during those overlapping crises?
Tina: I didn’t have the luxury of slowing down. Austin needed me. Even on the days when I was exhausted and in pain, my focus was on him. There were times when he didn’t even have nursing staff, so I became the nurse, pulling double shifts day and night to make sure he had the care he needed. He can never be left alone since he’s on a ventilator.
I was very lucky that I didn’t have to go through any chemo or radiation treatments because we caught the cancer in time. But after my hysterectomy, I struggled with weight gain for over a year because I refused to go on hormones. I reached the heaviest weight of my life, which was hard both physically and emotionally. Eventually, I did start hormones, got my weight back under control, and that’s when I turned to working out. Fitness became another outlet for me…a way to take back control and build strength not just for myself, but also for Austin. Now I’ve taken that journey even further by preparing for a bodybuilding show, which has given me a new goal.
INSPIRE: You’ve endured the loss of your best friend on top of everything else. How did that affect your emotional state, and how did you begin to heal from so many layered losses?

"I carried guilt, wondering if I could have done more, anger at the addiction that stole her, and an aching sadness that she never found the peace she was searching for."

Tina: Losing my best friend was devastating. We had been inseparable since junior high. She was that one person who knew every chapter of my life, the kind of friend you could call at 2 a.m. and she would never question you. But she was fighting her own demons with alcohol addiction, and even though I wanted so badly to save her, her passing left a hole in my heart.
Watching her battle addiction was heartbreaking because I could see the strong, beautiful person she was beneath it all. I carried guilt, wondering if I could have done more, anger at the addiction that stole her, and an aching sadness that she never found the peace she was searching for.
For a long time, I felt a mix of grief, guilt, and helplessness. Grief because I missed her every day, guilt because I wished I could have done more, and helplessness because I knew I couldn’t change the outcome. It wasn’t just the loss of her, but the loss of all the moments we should have had ahead of us. We talked about growing old together. On top of everything else I was already carrying, it felt like one more piece of my foundation had been taken away.
INSPIRE: Bodybuilding became a turning point for you…a way to honor your son’s fighting spirit and reclaim your own health. What drew you to the sport in the first place?

"Bodybuilding gave me structure, discipline, and a goal that pushed me beyond my limits."

Tina: I wanted to do something that challenged me physically and mentally. Bodybuilding gave me structure, discipline, and a goal that pushed me beyond my limits. The carnivore diet became a key part of my transformation, helping me fuel my training, shed weight, and feel stronger than I have in years.
INSPIRE: At the 2025 IPL Arizona Championship, you earned the Inspiration & Transformation Top Transformation Award, two Pro Cards, and multiple titles. What did those moments feel like after everything you’ve been through?
Tina: It was unreal. Standing on that stage, I thought about my son Austin and everything he’s gone through in life. He can’t even move…he’s a quadriplegic, completely dependent on a machine to breathe…yet he always has a smile on his face. That gives me strength every day and reminds me not to take life for granted. Winning wasn’t really about me, it was about showing what’s possible when you refuse to give up. Everyone has a story, everyone faces battles we don’t always see. What matters is how we choose to live through those struggles…whether we let them break us or not.
INSPIRE: Competing on the IPL stage at 52 and after all you have been through is no small feat. How did your training and preparation reflect the physical and emotional resilience you’ve built over the years?

"At 52, I wasn’t just preparing my body...I was proving to myself that resilience can be built and rebuilt over a lifetime."

Tina: My training for the IPL stage was deeply personal. At 52, I wasn’t just preparing my body…I was proving to myself that resilience can be built and rebuilt over a lifetime. Physically, I followed a strict carnivore diet, aiming for about 1,400 calories a day in the leaning-out phase. Hitting high protein and fat goals kept me fueled, even when I felt too full after just one meal. It was about discipline and listening to my body, but also pushing it toward the demands of competition.
In the gym, my schedule was all about strength training. Back, chest, legs, arms, and shoulders…paired with steady cardio like the StairMaster and rower to keep me leaning out. Some days I was sore, tired, or overwhelmed with caregiving responsibilities, but I never let that stop me. I reminded myself that every rep was building not just muscle, but proof of endurance.
Emotionally, my preparation mirrored the battles I’ve already lived through…fighting for my son’s life when doctors said there was no hope, surviving my own health challenges, and carrying the weight of caregiving without quitting. Bodybuilding became a place to channel all of that energy. The stage wasn’t just a finish line…it was a celebration of survival and faith. It showed me, and hopefully others, that it’s never too late to transform your body and spirit.
My son has never given up, so why would I? He’s a quadriplegic who can’t move or breathe without a machine, yet he smiles every day. That taught me that resilience isn’t about circumstances. It’s about how we face them. Everyone has a story, and we all have battles no one else sees. What matters is how we choose to live through them…with discipline, belief, and determination.

"...take it one day, even one minute at a time. Everyone has a story, and the power comes from refusing to give up."

INSPIRE Magazine: What role has faith played in helping you and Austin push forward through pain, surgeries, and the long road to recovery?
Tina: Faith is the reason we’re still here. There were moments when the only thing I could do was pray. I’ve witnessed miracles in my son’s life…things doctors said were impossible.
INSPIRE: For other parents or individuals facing life-changing adversity, what words of encouragement or advice would you offer to help them find their own “power through pain”?
Tina: When you see your child lying in a coma fighting for his life, you feel helpless and go through every emotion…even questioning God. But I’ve learned we don’t get to choose our battles, only how we fight them. My son Austin has never given up. He can’t move, he can’t breathe without machines…yet he still smiles. If he can keep going, so can I. That’s what I tell others: take it one day, even one minute at a time. Everyone has a story, and the power comes from refusing to give up.

"Austin...dreams of meeting Ryan Reynolds since he has a dark sense of humor like his Deadpool character. He also wants to go to Japan for his graduation."

INSPIRE Magazine: After such an incredible year, what’s next for you in both your fitness journey and your life with Austin?
Tina: After this incredible year, I’m focused on continuing both my fitness journey and my mission with Austin. In bodybuilding, I’m not done yet. I plan to keep competing, getting stronger, and pushing myself further. For Austin, our focus remains on his recovery from his full spine surgery and his comfort.
My biggest mission is expanding ACE Lending Closet. I’ve already outgrown my storage units and need a warehouse so we can provide medical supplies and equipment to anyone in Alaska, and anyone visiting Alaska.

"No matter what challenges life throws at you, resilience, faith, and determination can carry you through. You just need to believe."
