INTERVIEW & PHOTOS BY BEN YOSEF
In the world of fitness, entrepreneurship, and unwavering determination, few individuals encapsulate the essence of success as vividly as our cover star, La’net Spence. With an unparalleled drive, La’net has forged an extraordinary path, etching her name as a 7X Pro Champion in the IPL.
In this exclusive interview, La’net graciously shares her wisdom, unveiling the strategies, principles, and invaluable insights that have propelled her to the summit of both the fitness arena and the entrepreneurial landscape.
"I was not the best. I was not an All-Around Champion. What I loved was cheering ALL of us on."
BEN YOSEF: First of all, congratulations on basically everything! It’s been such a pleasure watching you blossom since first meeting you a couple of years ago on the IPL stage. You have so many amazing things going on as far as competition and coaching as well as off the stage. And I must say, the vibe and the tone of this cover feature inspired me to create another publication that is dedicated strictly to celebrating the entrepreneurial ventures of our athletes. Athlete Entrepreneur Magazine! This interview would be really fitting for that publication, but we’re going to get into it in SEAM Magazine instead! What was your upbringing and childhood like?
LA’NET SPENCE: Thanks, Ben! I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska. For the majority of my childhood, I thought the world ended at the corner of Airport Road and the Steese Highway. You don’t know what that means yet, but you will once you get there in September. [laughs]
In Alaska, our families spend the weekends on adventure. We boat, ride, camp, hunt, trap, fly, and fish. It’s for fun. It’s also for provision. We love our game meat and fresh fish. We live off the land. It’s our lifestyle in Alaska. So much wilderness and beauty.
I was a gymnast in high and high school. That is literally the only reason I graduated from high school. I loved to party.
BEN: Very cool. And yes! I am looking forward to spending time in Alaska this fall! So, you loved to party? Gymnastics is what got you through school? You weren’t a great student?
LA’NET: I was definitely more social than scholarly in high school. I loved my gymnastics TEAM, and I respected my coach, Sheryl. I squeaked out a diploma. As I look back now, it was the familiar feeling of being conditioned, strong, limber, and fit. I also loved being with my team back then. I was not the best. I was not an All-Around Champion. What I loved was cheering ALL of us on. We traveled across the state by van. I made lifelong friends during those trips. One of them is on our team, Rhonda.
I’m so grateful to have found the IPL. Our team is now able to have the culture we KNOW helps athletes achieve their best in all areas of life. I feel so proud to be on this journey with them.
BEN: Balancing a thriving career and excelling in the fitness world must be challenging. How do you manage to maintain such a high level of dedication to both your business endeavors and your fitness goals?
"It takes dedication and prioritization. Plan the work, work the plan."
LA’NET: I am blessed to be in charge of who I am, and what I do. Once I decided to take charge of my career for myself, I was able to balance life. I thrive in the way that one fuels the other. It takes dedication and prioritization. Plan the work, work the plan.
BEN: As a successful entrepreneur and fitness leader, what key strategies or philosophies do you apply to achieve success in both your professional and personal life?
LA’NET: I think, as far as my philosophy and strategy, I would say that it’s important to put first things first. Once you fill your cup spiritually, professionally, physically, relationally…then you can pour from that cup. EVERY DAY.
BEN: Your achievements in the fitness industry are inspiring. Can you share some of the most impactful lessons you’ve learned throughout your journey as a Pro Champion in the International Physique League?
LA’NET: Thank you for the kind words about my achievements in the fitness industry. My most valuable learned lesson is to focus on what you can control. Your attitude and activity, also the people you surround yourself with. 100% within your control, and very important.
BEN: With the demands of both business and maintaining a top-tier physique, how do you stay motivated and disciplined day in and day out?
LA’NET: Staying motivated to me means starting every day with gratitude and prayer. Without a firm foundation to stand on AND a good strong WHY…when motivation fades, and it will…Faith and discipline will stand strong.
"...always believe in yourself, finish everything you start, show up confident. Most of all, play nice in the arena."
BEN: The title of “7X Pro Champion” is incredibly prestigious. What advice would you offer to aspiring athletes looking to reach similar heights in their respective sports or fitness competitions?
LA’NET: My advice to others is to always believe in yourself, finish everything you start, show up confident. Most of all, play nice in the arena. I learn so much from competitors every single time I’m at a show. That’s the secret. Love everyone, especially those you compete against.
BEN: How do you integrate your fitness expertise into your entrepreneurial ventures? How has your success in fitness impacted your approach to business?
LA’NET: As far as the business side of my life… I have chosen a career path that is complementary to the other things I do for work. My work ethic = expect excellence. My circle has changed quite a bit in the last five years. I believe that is a big part of it. A very strong leader in my circle says it this way… “How you do anything is how you do everything.”
BEN: Maintaining peak physical condition requires a strong mindset. How do you nurture a positive and resilient mindset, especially during challenging moments in your career or personal life?
"Starting the day with gratitude, and ending each day with thankfulness and counting blessings has helped me..."
LA’NET: I’m so glad that you asked about mindset. It’s a big part of who I am. I am constantly leaning into scripture, personal growth and professional growth. I sound like a broken record… Starting the day with gratitude, and ending each day with thankfulness and counting blessings has helped me not only through tough times, but to manage things that come up unexpectedly.
BEN: Looking ahead, what are your future aspirations in both the fitness industry and your entrepreneurial pursuits? Any exciting projects or goals on the horizon that you can share with us?
