At 68, Adrienne Akinsete is redefining what it means to embrace a healthy lifestyle, proving that age is merely a number. Gracing the cover of INSPIRE Magazine, Adrienne embodies empowerment and resilience, drawing from her own transformative journey that began after her battle with breast cancer. Earning Bikini Model Masters & Swimsuit Model Masters Pro Cards at the August 2024 9th Annual IPL Southwest Grand Prix in Scottsdale Arizona, she stands as a beacon of hope for younger women, showcasing that it’s never too late to pursue health, fitness, and personal goals. In this exclusive interview, Adrienne shares her inspiring story, the joy of competition, and her unwavering belief that fitness is accessible to everyone, no matter their age.

"...I hope to convey that fitness is accessible to everyone, regardless of age. It’s about making choices that promote well-being, cultivating resilience, and finding joy in movement."

INSPIRE MAGAZINE: Congratulations, Adrienne! You achieved remarkable success at the IPL Southwest Grand Prix contest, winning multiple titles and earning Pro Cards in several divisions. How would you describe your experience at that contest?
ADRIENNE AKINSETE: Thank you so much! My experience at the Grand Prix contest was truly incredible and a significant milestone in my bodybuilding journey. Competing at this level was both exhilarating and challenging. Each moment on stage fulfilled my expectation to bring a better physique to each subsequent show.
Winning multiple titles and earning a Pro Card is what I came for. Each session at the gym, each meal I prepared, each posing session and practice I kept telling myself I’m gonna get a Pro Card in this league. The atmosphere was electric, the audience was in awe of my age and that always makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something truly special.
This contest was not just about the accolades. It was another chapter in my ongoing journey to be strong and healthy as I grow older. It reminded me of the importance of perseverance, discipline, and setting goals. Each competition I try to bring a better version of myself and this one was no exception. I walked away with not just trophies, but a true sense of self value that I will cherish forever!
INSPIRE: Gracing the cover of INSPIRE Magazine is a huge accomplishment. What message do you hope to convey to readers about the intersection of fitness and lifestyle through your cover feature?

"My journey took a significant turn after my battle with breast cancer in 2001, which prompted me to adopt a healthier lifestyle."

ADRIENNE: Gracing the cover of INSPIRE Magazine is indeed a tremendous honor. As a 68-year-old woman, my primary message is one of empowerment and inspiration for younger women. I want to show that age does not limit you and that it’s never too late to embrace a healthy lifestyle. I draw inspiration from the remarkable women in their 70s and 80s who exemplify strength and vitality, and it’s my goal to do the same for the younger generation.
My journey took a significant turn after my battle with breast cancer in 2001, which prompted me to adopt a healthier lifestyle. I began to focus on my nutrition and exercise, but it wasn’t until I was 59 that I truly committed to transforming my physique. Losing over 50 pounds was a pivotal moment for me, demonstrating that fitness is a result of a dedicated lifestyle rather than a fad diet.
Through my feature in INSPIRE Magazine, I hope to convey that fitness is accessible to everyone, regardless of age. It’s about making choices that promote well-being, cultivating resilience, and finding joy in movement. I want readers to understand that a healthy lifestyle can lead to profound changes, both physically and mentally. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to embark on their own journeys toward health and wellness, proving that it’s never too late to start living your best life.
INSPIRE: That’s a powerful and inspiring message, Adrienne. It’s wonderful to hear how your journey has shaped your perspective on health and empowerment. At the Grand Prix you competed across four classes in three divisions. Did you have a favorite division?
ADRIENNE: Absolutely, my favorite division was Fitness Angels. This division truly resonated with me because it beautifully combines the artistry of dancing through posing with the presentation of my physique. I loved the creative aspect of developing my identity as a Fitness Angel, which allowed me to bring to fruition my imagination of myself wearing a bikini, adorned with wings and accessories while presenting my best physique on stage.

"The process of envisioning how my angel would move and pose felt like creating a choreography dance, and I found immense joy in practicing those movements."

The process of envisioning how my angel would move and pose felt like creating a choreography dance, and I found immense joy in practicing those movements. It was a unique experience that allowed me to express myself artistically while showcasing my hard work and dedication to fitness.
INSPIRE: What was it like for you balancing the different divisions you entered?
ADRIENNE: Balancing the different divisions was both challenging and rewarding. My nutrition and exercise regimen remained consistent across the various divisions, however I did have to make changes in my posing. The posing style for Bikini Model was more fluid and freeform than what I had experienced as a Bikini competitor. Each division required a unique style and presentation, which meant I had to dedicate time to perfecting the specific posing routine that would best showcase my physique for each division.
For instance, the posing for the bikini division is quite different from that of Fitness Angels. This required me to work closely with my posing coach Leann Kelly, who is an IPL Pro, to choreograph routines that highlighted my strengths and fit the essence of each division.
INSPIRE: In your opinion, what sets the International Physique League apart from other physique competition organizations, and how has your experience with the IPL influenced your perspective on fitness and competition?
ADRIENNE: In my opinion, the International Physique League stands out from other physique competition organizations for several reasons. Particularly its focus on natural bodybuilding and a more holistic approach to judging criteria. As someone who is 68 years old and has been bodybuilding post-menopause at 59 without the aid of hormones, I appreciate that the IPL provides a level playing ground for competitors like myself. The journey of building my physique naturally over the past nine years has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding.

"In my experience, the IPL values the artistry and individual expression of each competitor, allowing for a more diverse representation of fitness."

Another key difference in the IPL is the way the league evaluates competitors. While other organizations may place a heavier emphasis on muscularity and conditioning, the IPL distributes its judging criteria across various aspects, including presentation and overall aesthetics. This is particularly important for those of us who may not fit the traditional mold of heavily muscled and extremely lean physiques. In my experience, the IPL values the artistry and individual expression of each competitor, allowing for a more diverse representation of fitness.
Additionally, the IPL features a Bikini Model category, which is not available in the other federation I have competed in. This category aligns more closely with the amount of muscle I’ve been able to build, and it allows me to showcase my physique in a way that feels authentic to me. The focus on fitness models emphasizes a balanced and healthy appearance, which resonates with my personal fitness philosophy. Based on my experience the IPL is not just a competition, but a celebration of fitness in all its forms.
INSPIRE: You’ve made a significant transition from amateur competitor to a Pro in just your first IPL contest. Has your approach to training and nutrition changed at all since your new Pro status achieved at the Grand Prix?
ADRIENNE: Transitioning from amateur competitor to Pro has certainly prompted a shift in my approach to training and nutrition. The prospects of  competing alongside Pro athletes who are at the top of their game, many of whom are 25 years my junior, means that I must be at the top of my own game as well. This has pushed me to elevate my standards and commitment, both physically and mentally.
One of the most significant changes I’ve made is in how I maintain my physique. As a fitness model, it’s crucial for me to stay almost stage-ready at all times. Unlike in the amateur ranks, where I could afford to go through phases of bulking and cutting, my new Pro status requires a more consistent approach. I need to present a physique that is always polished and ready for any opportunity that may arise, whether it’s a photoshoot or a last-minute competition.

"My workouts have become more focused on maintaining muscle definition and overall aesthetics rather than building size."

This demand for readiness has influenced my nutrition and exercise regimen significantly. I’ve shifted to a more balanced diet that supports my energy levels while keeping my physique in check. My workouts have become more focused on maintaining muscle definition and overall aesthetics rather than building size.
Moreover, my lifestyle has had to adapt to reflect this new reality. Staying organized and disciplined with my meal prep and training schedule has become essential. I’ve learned to prioritize recovery and self-care, understanding that at my age, maintaining my health and well-being is just as important as pushing for performance gains.
Overall, this transition to Pro status has not only challenged me to raise my game but has also reinforced my dedication to a lifestyle that embodies fitness, health, and readiness. It’s an exciting journey, and I’m embracing every moment of it!
INSPIRE: Reflecting on your journey so far, what has been the most unexpected benefit of entering the world of physique competition later in life?
ADRIENNE: The most unexpected benefit has been the profound impact it has had on me as an aging adult. This journey has provided me with a much-needed structure that has been essential for maintaining both my mental sharpness and physical fitness as I age.
Now that I’ve retired from the workforce, I realized that having a routine is increasingly important. Engaging in the discipline of meal planning, adhering to a consistent exercise regimen, and preparing for competitions has not only kept my body fit but has also sharpened my mind. The focus required for contest preparation—setting goals, tracking progress, and adhering to a structured plan—has given my days purpose and direction.

"I find myself energized and engaged, continually striving for improvement in my physical and mental capabilities, and overall well-being."

This structure has been an unexpected gift, allowing me to navigate this new phase of life with vitality and enthusiasm. I find myself energized and engaged, continually striving for improvement in my physical and mental capabilities, and overall well-being.
Moreover, being involved in physique competition has fostered a sense of community and connection with others who share similar goals and passions. This social aspect has further enriched my experience, providing support and encouragement that enhances my journey.
INSPIRE: You’ve mentioned that the IPL is a celebration of strength and community. Can you share a memorable interaction or experience with fellow IPL competitors that exemplifies this spirit?
ADRIENNE: Absolutely! Three memorable experiences stand out to me. First, the camaraderie among the competitors was incredible. The ladies who had previously competed in the IPL were more than willing to share valuable tips, like placing your number on the back of your bikini bottom before putting it on. That simple piece of advice made it so much easier to get it centered and positioned correctly.
Additionally, when someone needed a quick adjustment to their suit or if their hair was a bit off, someone offered to help. It was heartwarming to see everyone come together to ensure that each competitor looked flawless as they stepped out on stage.
After our individual routines, there was always someone ready to capture those special moments when a fellow competitor returned with a trophy, medal, or pro card. It was wonderful to have someone take a picture so that those memorable achievements could be shared with family and friends.
Lastly, exchanging social media handles added to the sense of camaraderie. It allows us to connect beyond the competition, sharing our journeys, progress updates, and personal stories. Through social media, we could celebrate each other’s victories—big or small—and provide encouragement during challenging times.

"...don’t wait to get started. Take that first step now, and remember that every journey begins with a single action. Embrace the process, and enjoy the journey ahead!"

INSPIRE: How do you balance the demands of physique competition with other aspects of your life, and what advice would you give to those looking to start their own fitness journey at a later stage?
ADRIENNE: Balancing the demands of physique competition with other aspects of life requires a strategic approach, much like how I navigated my career as a special education teacher. I learned the importance of working smarter and being efficient, and I apply those principles to my daily routine as a physique athlete. My experience in education taught me about accommodations and modifications, which I now incorporate into my life to ensure that my commitment to competing harmonizes with my responsibilities to family and friends.
To maintain this balance, I prioritize my training and nutrition while also being flexible. This means making adjustments when necessary to stay engaged with loved ones and fulfill other obligations. It’s all about creating a supportive environment that allows me to pursue my passion without sacrificing my relationships.
For those looking to embark on their own fitness journey later in life, my advice is to tailor your approach to fit your personality and lifestyle. If you thrive on commitment and motivation, consider setting a specific competition date to work towards. This can provide a clear goal to focus on. On the other hand, if you prefer a more gradual approach, start by sharing your fitness aspirations with family and friends. This accountability can help you stay motivated as you work towards your goals.
Most importantly, don’t wait to get started. Take that first step now, and remember that every journey begins with a single action. Embrace the process, and enjoy the journey ahead!

"... my goals are not just about personal achievement but also about building a supportive community where we can all thrive together. I'm excited for the journey ahead and the opportunities it will bring!"

INSPIRE: Looking ahead, what are your future goals within the IPL and the world of fitness?
ADRIENNE: Looking ahead, my primary goal within the IPL is to consistently present an improved version of myself, with the ultimate aim of securing 1st place. To achieve this, I plan to compete three times a year, as I’ve found that having too much time between competitions doesn’t work in my favor. This regular engagement will not only help me refine my skills but also keep my motivation high.
In terms of my broader aspirations in the fitness world, I am committed to advancing my career as a fitness, fashion, bikini, and swimsuit model. Earning my Pro Card has ignited a new level of dedication and inspiration within me, fueling my desire to make my modeling career the best it can be. I aim to leverage my experiences and successes in the IPL to create a strong personal brand that resonates with others in the fitness community.
Additionally, I hope to inspire others on their fitness journeys by sharing my story and offering guidance to those wanting to improve their health and fitness and those who aspire to compete. Ultimately, my goals are not just about personal achievement but also about building a supportive community where we can all thrive together. I’m excited for the journey ahead and the opportunities it will bring! INSPIRE
