Will 4X IPL Pro Champion Bob Wills Make Another Comeback in 2024?

As the world of competitive athletics continues to evolve, one name stands out as an enduring symbol of resilience and determination—Bob Wills. A four-time IPL Pro champion, Wills made an inspiring return to the stage in 2023 after a two-year hiatus. The road to that moment was anything but easy. Now, as we approach 2024, the question on everyone’s mind is: Will Bob Wills return to the spotlight again?
A Story of Triumph Over Adversity
For those who witnessed Bob Wills’ return to the stage at the 2023 8th Annual IPL Southwest Grand Prix in Phoenix, Arizona, it was nothing short of extraordinary. Competing in Pro Masters Athletic and Pro Masters Sports Model, Wills placed 4th and 3rd, respectively, but it was his transformation and recovery that truly stole the show.
Wills’ comeback was not just about earning trophies; it was about overcoming monumental health challenges. After a heart attack in 2008, Wills’ health was a constant battle, one that became even more daunting in the years that followed.
In 2021, doctors found lumps in his lymph nodes, raising concerns about potential lymphoma. While the results were benign, the emotional toll was significant. Then, in early 2022, Wills began experiencing a sharp decline in his heart function. His heart function dropped from 45% to a concerning 25%, leaving him struggling with even the simplest physical activities. Walking around the block or completing a workout set became near impossible.
“I was a fraction of a hair from needing a pacemaker put in. That’s how close I was last year,” Wills reflected. “If everything was fine, why am I feeling this way still? It was a scary time.”
Despite a range of tests and changes in medication, Wills was told that if his condition did not improve, a pacemaker would be necessary. Miraculously, after months of uncertainty, a slight improvement in his heart function meant that the pacemaker could be avoided. A simple recommendation to exercise and lose weight began Wills’ arduous journey back to health.
The Return: Against All Odds
When Bob Wills stepped onto the stage in Phoenix in August 2023, it was clear that he had not just competed, but overcome the odds. “It was a long, slow process to get back up to speed on my workouts,” Wills explained, noting that after a year of minimal movement, returning to the gym felt like starting from scratch. Still, the results were undeniable. He had dropped over 20% body fat, reaching 11.4% by the time of the competition.
While he faced moments of discouragement—especially when he hit a plateau during his training—Wills’ resilience kept him going. “If I could have quit, I would have,” he admitted. “At this point, I just became happy to be returning to the stage.” But once he arrived at the Grand Prix, Wills’ mindset shifted. Instead of simply being grateful for the opportunity to compete, he focused on excelling. He competed fiercely against some of the best in the league and walked away not only with top placements but with the honor of an “Inspiration & Transformation” award.
The Big Question: What’s Next for Bob Wills?
As we look ahead to 2024, fans and fellow competitors are left wondering if Bob Wills will make another comeback to the stage. At the time of his 2023 return, Wills shared that his focus had shifted to competing at the highest level, not just participating. With his heart function back to its previous levels and his training capacity restored, the idea of stepping back into the spotlight remains an open possibility.
However, there is no official word from Wills on whether he will compete again in 2024. After a year of intense physical and emotional challenges, he may choose to prioritize other aspects of his life, as he has already proven that he has nothing left to prove. For Wills, the competition isn’t just about medals—it’s about the message he sends to others: that determination, even in the face of adversity, can lead to incredible achievements.
The Legacy of a Champion
Regardless of whether he competes again, Bob Wills’ legacy as a four-time IPL Pro Champion and his remarkable comeback story has already made a lasting impact on the athletic community. His openness about his struggles has been a source of inspiration to many. He has shown that health challenges, while daunting, are not insurmountable when paired with a relentless will to push forward. In his own words: “I am grateful to be alive and to have my health back!”
As for 2024, while the future may remain uncertain, one thing is clear: Bob Wills has already made his mark on the world of competitive athletics, and whatever the future holds, his story will continue to inspire for years to come. ATHLETIC
