"At first, it felt surreal, almost like a dream. I even went to sleep hoping it wasn't just my imagination. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd see myself on a magazine cover."
INSPIRE MAGAZINE: Rochelle, welcome to INSPIRE Magazine! And congratulations on the cover! Seeing yourself on the cover of INSPIRE Magazine must be exciting! Can you walk us through how you felt when you first saw the cover image and what it means to you personally?
ROCHELLE MATTER: Thank you! Seeing myself on the cover of INSPIRE Magazine was an exhilarating mix of excitement, shock, and joy. At first, it felt surreal, almost like a dream. I even went to sleep hoping it wasn’t just my imagination. And sure enough, it was still real when I woke up! Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d see myself on a magazine cover.
Throughout my life, struggling with body image issues, I never truly liked how I looked, nor did I believe achieving such a transformation was possible. This accomplishment is a testament to the incredible support from my trainers and my boyfriend, who helped me reshape not only my physique but also how I see myself. To be the face of INSPIRE feels deeply meaningful, especially considering I never thought I’d be in a position to inspire others.
The reaction from my grandkids after my first show…mimicking my stage walk, flexing, and posing…was heartwarming and underscored the impact of this journey. I am immensely honored to represent INSPIRE Magazine and hope my story can motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter how distant they seem.
"...after moving to Idaho and facing continued dissatisfaction with my appearance and self-perception, I reached out to La'net again. This time, I was ready to commit."
INSPRE: Your transformation journey has been truly inspiring. What was the moment or event that made you decide to improve your health and fitness? And what made you want to jump into physique competitions?
ROCHELLE: My transformation journey began when I met La’net Spence in Anchorage, Alaska, in the early 2000s. Despite my initial doubts about our friendship—she was the “cool kid” with an amazing physique I admired—we connected deeply, even discovering we shared the same birthday.
For years, I trained with La’net, absorbing workouts and advice, but my commitment wavered, and I struggled with consistent results. It wasn’t until I met Coach Teresa Moss through La’net that a true turning point emerged. Initially, I didn’t make much of an impression on her. I wasn’t the “no excuses” type she typically coached. However, after moving to Idaho and facing continued dissatisfaction with my appearance and self-perception, I reached out to La’net again. This time, I was ready to commit.
Despite initial reservations about competing, with the encouragement of La’net and the unexpected but wholehearted support of my boyfriend, Jeff, I decided to take the leap. I joined their bodybuilding team, embracing their rigorous training and strict nutrition regimen. The coaches emphasized positivity and self-love, challenging me to smile during training, even when I didn’t feel like it.
"Being a part of this inspiring community changed how I view myself and my capabilities. It proved that with dedication and the right support, transforming one's life is indeed possible."
With six months of dedicated preparation, I transformed not just my body but my mindset. My first competition was a revelation—I won 1st and 2nd place, igniting a passion that reassured me I was on the right path. The journey was tough, requiring me to unlearn old habits and embrace new challenges in training, nutrition, and self-perception. Each step forward was a testament to the patience of my coaches and the unconditional support of Jeff. Being a part of this inspiring community changed how I view myself and my capabilities. It proved that with dedication and the right support, transforming one’s life is indeed possible.
INSPIRE: Competing at IPL APEX VIII in Phoenix, Arizona, at 54 years old and achieving runner-up spots in multiple divisions is an incredible accomplishment. What was APEX VIII contest weekend like for you?
ROCHELLE: Competing at IPL APEX VIII at 54 was profoundly inspiring. Although I was thrilled to achieve runner-up positions, interacting with formidable competitors and remarkable teammates was the true highlight. Our team’s hike to Piestewa Peak to watch the sunrise was a particular moment of tranquility and communion I’ll never forget. Feeling God’s presence with us as we climbed, and experiencing such profound peace at the summit, reinforced the spiritual bond shared among us.
Throughout the weekend, our camaraderie deepened, filled with moments of shared prayers, laughter, tears, and meals. One of my favorite experiences was the powerful prayer sessions led by La’net and Coach T, whose leadership and devotion were truly uplifting. Spending our last evening together, sharing stories and ‘new girl’ secrets, encapsulated the joy and unity of our team.
"While I've been known to push through pain, often against advice due to my stubborn nature, I've learned that patience is essential for long-term health and performance."
This weekend was more than a competition; it was a reaffirmation of faith, friendship, and personal growth. The entire experience was a reminder of the strength found in community and the peace that comes from spiritual connection, making it one of the most memorable times of my life.
INSPIRE: You’ve mentioned the challenges of self-doubt and injuries along your journey. How did you stay motivated through those tough times, and what advice would you give to others facing similar struggles?
ROCHELLE: Navigating through the challenges of self-doubt and injuries has been a significant part of my journey, and the unwavering support from my coaches and family has been crucial. Whenever I faced obstacles, I turned to my trainers, La’net and Coach T. They tailored workouts to accommodate my injuries and ensured I maintained the right nutrition to keep my energy levels up. Their belief in my potential provided a tremendous boost during tough times. The solidarity from my family—Jeff, my children, and grandchildren—also played a pivotal role. Their encouragement reinforced my determination to compete and be my best.
For anyone facing similar struggles, my advice is to surround yourself with a supportive team. It’s not just about having expert coaches but also about cultivating a network of encouragement among peers and loved ones. Additionally, incorporating spirituality can provide a profound source of strength and healing, as it has for me. When dealing with injuries, it’s crucial to listen to professional advice and give your body time to heal. While I’ve been known to push through pain, often against advice due to my stubborn nature, I’ve learned that patience is essential for long-term health and performance. Leaning on positive influences and maintaining a determined mindset are key.
"...never let anyone convince you that your goals are unattainable. Keep pushing and stay focused on what you truly want, and with the right support, you'll overcome the hurdles along the way."
Remember, never let anyone convince you that your goals are unattainable. Keep pushing and stay focused on what you truly want, and with the right support, you’ll overcome the hurdles along the way.
INSPIRE: You’ve talked quite a bit about the support you received from your trainers, La’net and Teresa. How important has their guidance been in your success, and what specific role did they play in your recent achievements?
ROCHELLE: The guidance from my trainers, La’net and Teresa, has been indispensable to my success. As accomplished IPL Pro Athletes themselves, they provide expert advice, training, and feedback that is crucial for my performance on stage. They have an exceptional ability to see potential in me that I often overlook, especially during moments of self-doubt. Their tailored changes to my training regimen are demanding but extraordinarily effective—transforming not just my physique but also my confidence. Coach T recognizes and nurtures the potential within me, pushing me with challenging workouts that lead to visible improvements, often noted by others as a dramatic transformation from one competition to the next.
La’net and Teresa also ensure that our nutrition and training are perfectly aligned to build the muscle and physique we aim to achieve and maintain for competitions. Sticking to the prescribed macros is challenging, but with strategies shared by teammates like Heather and Rhonda, it becomes more manageable.
"This comprehensive support system not only enhances my physical capabilities but also builds my mental resilience, both of which are vital for my achievements in bodybuilding."
Their support goes beyond physical training. They actively work to improve my mindset, reminding me of the importance of a positive attitude in achieving excellence. This comprehensive support system not only enhances my physical capabilities but also builds my mental resilience, both of which are vital for my achievements in bodybuilding.
INSPIRE: What role has your boyfriend, Jeff, played in your journey? How has his support helped you push through difficult moments?
ROCHELLE: Jeff has been a huge part of my journey, offering support in every conceivable way: emotionally, physically, mentally, and financially. We started working out together when we began dating 22 years ago, traversing numerous gyms in Anchorage, Alaska, and continuing through our move to Idaho. Though our schedules eventually changed causing us to train separately, Jeff’s support never wavered. He was there for my first competition, boosting my confidence and celebrating my achievements by reminding me that I was a winner no matter the outcome. When I expressed my desire to compete again and chase after my pro card, Jeff was right there, offering the same unwavering support, proud of me regardless of the results.
During times of injury, Jeff was both my comforter and caretaker, helping me with ice wraps and massages to alleviate my tendonitis. His reminders to take rest seriously helped me navigate the frustrations that came with recovery, ensuring I didn’t push myself too hard and risk further injury. Financially, he has been incredibly generous, from covering our grocery bills to ensure I have the right nutrition, to supporting my expenses for competitions like my trip to Arizona.
"The IPL community has significantly impacted my personal development. It has taught me the importance of health, self-care, and self-acceptance."
INSPIRE: What does it mean to be part of the IPL family, and how has being involved in this community influenced your growth both as an athlete and as a person?
ROCHELLE: Being part of the IPL Family is a profound honor and a solid foundation for my personal and athletic growth. The community is characterized by its caring, supportive, and encouraging nature, making it an ideal environment for natural bodybuilding. Each competition is a chance not only to strive for greater physical strength but also to meet new, like-minded individuals who share a commitment to natural athleticism and mutual support.
What distinguishes the IPL from other leagues is the strong focus on fostering connections that go beyond competitions. Each event strengthens our team’s bond, enhancing both our collective and individual resilience and spirit. This has been instrumental in my growth as an athlete, pushing me to continuously improve and embrace the discipline required to excel.
The IPL community has significantly impacted my personal development. It has taught me the importance of health, self-care, and self-acceptance. Through interactions with fellow athletes and from the broader IPL community, I’ve learned to treat myself with the same kindness and encouragement that I extend to others. The inclusive and affirming environment of the IPL has not only made me a stronger competitor but has also made me a healthier, more self-loving individual.
"Starting a fitness journey or entering competitions at 54, I'm living proof that it's never too late to redefine your health and fitness goals."
INSPIRE: At 54, you’re defying conventional expectations in the bodybuilding and athletic space. What message would you like to send to others, particularly women, who might think it’s too late to start a fitness journey or pursue a competition?
ROCHELLE: Starting a fitness journey or entering competitions at 54, I’m living proof that it’s never too late to redefine your health and fitness goals. I often wish I had started competing earlier, but I’ve learned that age should not be a deterrent. With the right support and mindset, anyone can redefine their limits at any stage of life. The journey begins with a decision to commit—to realize that it’s possible to attain the health and physique you desire.
Consistency, dedication, and persistence are key, but so is nutrition. Transforming beliefs like “I can’t” or “it’s not possible” into “I can” and “it’s absolutely possible” requires not just physical effort but mental fortitude. Joining a community like the IPL, where everyone supports one another, amplifies this transformation. Personal encouragement from family and friends adds to this supportive environment. However, there are days when you must be your own biggest supporter—days when coaches and teammates are preoccupied with their own challenges. On these days, you need to stand strong on your own and continue pushing forward. It’s about proving to yourself that you’re worth the effort. Seeing the physical changes you’ve worked so hard for, and being able to say, “Yes, I did this for me,” is profoundly rewarding. Inspiring yourself is the greatest achievement, and inspiring others is just the icing on the cake.
"I’m gearing up for the 2025 fall competition. This period will be crucial as I aim to enhance my muscle building and refine my posing techniques to be more fluid and natural."
INSPIRE: Looking ahead, you’ve said you’re “not done yet.” What’s next for you in your bodybuilding and athletic career, and what goals are you setting for the future that you’re most excited to achieve?
ROCHELLE: Looking ahead, I’m gearing up for the 2025 fall competition. This period will be crucial as I aim to enhance my muscle building and refine my posing techniques to be more fluid and natural. Achieving these improvements is crucial as I prepare to earn my Pro Card and compete alongside the incredible athletes in the IPL Family. I’ve decided to postpone my participation until the fall to support Jeff during an important time for him. He has always been there for me, and this is my opportunity to give back and be there for him. This decision not only strengthens our relationship but also provides me with additional time to focus on making significant gains in my training. INSPIRE
